Improv Friday – 2/17/2012 – “Cove”

Improv Friday is an online musical event where composers of all stripes gather to write and improvise every Friday. These are not “songs” as many are used to hearing from me, but improvised works or as the website says, works “with strong improvisational elements,” for those who have ears to hear. It’s a way to stay busy, sketch, experiment, generate ideas, keep creativity flowing, hear others’ work, learn, explore.  I joined last week and so have two pieces there now.  I will post them here too whenever I participate. Here’s what the website says about the event:

ImprovFriday – An online new music event. What first started out as a two hour event now spans three days (its a world time clock thing)! The rest of the time is for listening to music, hanging out and sharing ideas. Each week the music will kick off between 2-4 pm Thursday, PST, concluding at 10 pm Saturday, PST. It’s very easy to join in, all you have to do is post an improvisation or a piece with strong improvisational elements. We put up this site to serve as a home for your creativity.

This weeks’ song, “Cove” unfolded in one sitting. The opening sample is “Dronetail 02” from “Dronetails Pack 1” by Jovica Storer at The Freesound Project.

Steve Layton used this piece in a “longer, softly catastrophic ambient mash-up,” The Shipwreck, with two other pieces by composers Paul H. Muller and J.C. Combs. He’s really great at this and often it’s a case of the mashup being greater than the sum of its parts.

The Shipwreck

Last week’s Improv Friday had “Voice” as its theme.  “Either solo or accompanied, single, multiple, choral, real, synthesized, sampled, sung, spoken, found on another recording… It doesn’t matter as long as voice is the primary “instrument.”

Behave Yourself

That same day Andrew Breitbart had a bit of a meltdown with the Occupy Protesters who were gathered outside of the CPAC conference.  The whole exchange was caught on video from whence “Behave Yourself,” my musical collage comes.

  1. Wow, I thought all three pieces were great however, I do feel for Brietbart……….a person shouldn’t do silly things to show other silly folk their own silliness (doesn’t that sound silly)?
I checked out The Freesound Project and bookmarked the page………how is that site?!?!
I enjoy reading your postings Ojo!!!

    • Hey Sterling,
Thanks for listening and for reading. I wasn’t trying to make a political point in that one. The whole thing just struck me. Yes, that site is pretty cool. Kinda like a candy store, or maybe better yet, a bookstore…. I could spend WAY too much time in there! Cheers!
